Kruger Lowveld: Discovering Nelspruit (Mbombela), Mpumalanga

Nelspruit is a charming town close to Kruger National Park. Now known as Mbombela and home to a World Cup stadium. This stadium, which was constructed for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, is currently utilized for soccer and rugby matches. The steel support structure resembles giraffe necks, a frequent species in Mpumalanga, in an unmistakable manner. This stadium's beautiful gymnasium is underutilized, despite a substantial investment.

Nelspruit is located in the lush Crocodile River valley. It is the entry point to Mpumalanga and Kruger National Park. Nelspruit is a perfect location from which to explore Mpumalanga due to its plenty of sunshine, moderate subtropical climate, beautiful terrain, and abundance of local attractions. The internationally renowned Kruger National Park is Mpumalanga's most popular tourist destination. As the largest reserve in South Africa, it encompasses 19,480 km2 and is home to a variety of wildlife, including the Big 5, Big 6 birding species, and more mammal species than any other African game reserve. Self-drive safaris or guided trips offer an unparalleled safari experience. Good infrastructure consists of picnic areas, rest camps, watering holes, and concealment areas.

Mpumalanga's capital, Nelspruit, has been renamed Mbombela and offers something for everyone. The Lowveld Botanical Garden features a rare collection of more than 650 plant species, the world's first man-made rain forest, and a calm pool where the Crocodile River joins the Nels River (which cascades down a waterfall in the west). The mountains surrounding Nelspruit have magnificent hiking trails for hikers of all fitness levels. Nelspruit Nature Reserve provides many one- to six-hour hikes. Admire native foliage, a variety of birds, and tiny antelope on the Green Heritage Hiking Route, or learn about Nelspruit's history on the Nelspruit Historical Walking Path.

The Nelspruit Golf Course is the busiest in the region and offers excellent opportunity to score birdies as well as observe a variety of birdlife. Mbombela Stadium is a wonderful location for sporting events, live performances, and exhibitions. The Sudwala Caves, recognized as the world's oldest known caves, are another notable attraction. There are several caverns featuring stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone formations within the caves. Located adjacent to the caves, the Dinosaur Park and Culture Center features life-size models of dinosaurs, the extinct Cape Lion and Cape Quagga, a 3-meter-long Nile crocodile, and prehistoric man. Outside in a subtropical garden with ancient cycads, the park offers educational opportunities for people of all ages. The most popular season to explore this region is during the winter, when the days are warm but it is less humid and rainy than in the summer.
