Mpumalanga - Kruger Lowveld
The Kruger Lowveld Travel Directory
General Information
The ‘Lowveld’ is that part of South Africa between the eastern escarpment and the Lubombo mountains on the Mozambique border. Much of this region is occupied by the vast Kruger National Park and adjacent private reserves including the Sabi-Sand and Timbavati.
West of the Kruger are the foothills and although much of this area is under citrus or timber cultivation, there are some very worthwhile birding localities in the vicinity of Nelspruit (Mbombela) and its Kruger-Mpumalanga International Airport.
The largest game reserve in South Africa, the Kruger National Park is larger than Israel. Nearly 2 million hectares of land that stretch for 352 kilometres (20 000 square kilometres) from north to south along the Mozambique border, is given over to an almost indescribable wildlife experience.
To the South of the area, between the Kruger National Park and the Swaziland (Eswatini) border, lies an area of Lowveld known as the Maputo-Nelspruit development corridor. This is, above all else, an agricultural area, and here you will find a large proportion of South Africa's tropical fruit and vegetables.
Activities in the Kruger Lowveld
Visitors can also see archaeological ruins, old waggon trails and gold diggings. Situated just to the West of Nelspruit, the Capital of Mpumalanga, are the famous Sudwala Caves, a "must" for any visitor to the Lowveld.
The Kruger Lowveld region is as well known for its spectacular beauty and adventure activities as it is for the Kruger National Park and its game viewing potential. Boasting the Panorama Route and Blyde River Canyon, the Lowveld National Botanical Gardens, the Shangana Cultural Village, Chimp Eden, Hoedspruit Research and Breeding Centre, Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre and Elephant Whispers, the area abounds with many activities and you can spend days exploring this magical part of the world on a once in a life time adventure holiday.
This Lowveld region of Mpumalanga offers a wide selection of adventure holidays, from rock climbing and hiking to white water rafting and windsurfing, from bird watching to paragliding. Mpumalanga is, without doubt, a part of South Africa that cannot be missed by any serious visitor to the country.
