Kaapsche Hoop

Kaapsche Hoop, sometimes spelled Kaapsehoop, is a town situated in the Kruger Lowveld region of Mpumalanga, South Africa.

Geography and History

In 1882 gold was discovered in the town and the hope that this discovery brought to the town’s people, as well as the fact that the town sits above The Cape Valley led to the town’s name, which means “The Cape’s Hope”.

Many horses were brought to the Kaapsche Hoop during the gold rush but after the towns deterioration, the horses were left to run free. These horses are still around today and roam wild and freely in the area.

Activities

The abandoned gold mines have had a positive effect on the rare Blue Swallows in the area, with the old mine shafts providing an ideal breeding ground for the birds.

Today the town has been rediscovered as a beautiful tourist destination, offering many nature and eco-related activities.
